✅ The Checklist Here's everything you need to do to protect yourself. ➡️ Buy directly where possible. Use the manufacturer’s own store and avoid second-hand devices. Buying direct reduces the number of people handling your wallet before it reaches you; it doesn’t eliminate every risk. ➡️ Follow the setup checks for your exact model. Stop if the box contains a prewritten recovery phrase or a preset PIN. Sealed packaging alone isn’t proof that a device is safe. ➡️ Bookmark the official website. Use that bookmark for downloads and security notices. Don’t let a search ad, email or reply under a support post choose the destination for you. ➡️ Verify urgent warnings separately. If a message tells you to migrate immediately, open the vendor’s website yourself and cross-check the advisory through another official channel. The Coldcard incident shows why a familiar account name isn’t enough. ➡️ Keep your recovery phrase out of online forms and support conversations. A request to enter it to “secure” or “validate” your wallet is a reason to stop. ➡️ If your device lets you add your own randomness, use it. Coldcard says seeds created with at least 50 private dice rolls were not at risk from its bug. ‼️ If You Already Bought From CryptoBilis Ledger's advice is clear. If the device is still unused, don't set it up. If you've already set it up, move your funds to a new seed on a device bought directly from Ledger. The same logic applies to Coldcard owners whose seed was generated on the affected firmware without dice rolls. Updating the firmware doesn't repair an existing seed, so the only fix is to create a new one and move your funds. ➖➖➖➖ 🧐 Bottom Line: A hardware wallet is still far safer than keeping your keys on a phone or an exchange. That said, 2026 has shown that attackers rarely go after the chip. They go after the shop you buy from, the company that ships it and the emails that follow.
